Protecting Clean Water and Preserving our Environment

At just under 10 acres with over 1,000 feet of Lake Monona shoreline, San Damiano’s conservation is critical for ensuring clean lakes. It has remained largely undisturbed for more than 100 years. When it came on to the market in 2019, I heard from constituents all across the district that they would like it to be protected from private development.

I made it a priority to preserve the San Damiano property and delivered on that promise in my first County budget. I authored an amendment to the 2020-2021 that added $2 million to support the City of Monona’s purchase of the property and again authored a resolution to authorize the purchase in 2021.

By securing the County funding, the City of Monona was able to complete the purchase of San Damiano. The Clean Lakes Alliance recognized this project with the 2020 Urban Project of the Year award.

Sustainable practices

Dane County is a leader on issues of sustainability and renewable energy, but I know that we can do more. I have served on Monona’s Sustainability Committee for several years and I know how important this issue is to our neighbors. I will continue to support the expansion of renewable energy, energy efficiency programs, and innovative partnerships to expand other sustainable practices across Dane County.
